Student Interaction on India –Pakistan Relations is being organized today, 9 March by PIPFPD (Pakistan India People’s Forum for Peace and Democracy) at JNU, Satluj Hostel post dinner, 9 30 pm onwards.

Jodhpur Peace March

The Peace March from Jodhpur to the international border at Munabao was organized by the National Committee and the Rajasthan’s state chapter of the Forum in December 2005. A similar march was organized by the Pakistani chapter to Khokrapar on the Pakistani side. The peace marchers on the Indian side went in buses and on foot to different towns and villages en route to Munabao and held meetings to mobilize public opinion in favour of reopening the rail connection between Jodhpur and Karachi. More than a thousand people assembled at the Munabao border and held a public meeting there. Members of the Pakistan Chapter also did the same on the other side of the border. The rail service was begun by both the governments in Feb 2006.

The initiative towards the formation of Pakistan-India People's Forum for Peace and Democracy was taken in late 1993 and the first joint declaration was announced on September 4, 1994 at Lahore. The objectives of this initiative was to facilitate common people in both the countries to listen to voices that are different from the belligerent voices of the respective Governments. It is with the objective of asserting the sanity of the peace loving people of India and Pakistan that concerned citizens and groups in both the countries have come together to formulate strategies for promoting peace and strengthen democracy in the sub-continent. Democratic rights activists, business people, trade unionist, environmentalists, women's movements, artists, writers, social workers, professionals, academicians, students, scientists and mass movements have joined hands in a concerted attempt to persuade their respective governments to enter into meaningful negotiations and adopt policies that will reduce tensions and pave way for lasting peace and friendship. Six historic meetings discussed five major issue. |
