Release February, 2005
Water issue between India and Pakistan needs serious attention and it was suggested today during deliberations
in the seventh joint convention of Pakistan-India Peoples’ Forum For
Peace And Democracy’s (PIPFPD) that the forum should set up a joint
committee to look into the water issue, that threatens the ongoing peace
process.
Dead lock on Baghliyar dam and hydroelectric
project has, to some extent, created suspicion in the minds of people
of both the countries. Pakistan has already approached World Bank to work as arbitrator. There are
also disputes on Kisanganga dam between two neighbouring countries.
The proposal to set up joint committee
was mooted by General Secretary of Pakistan Chapter Ms. Anis Haroon
and General Secretary of India Chapter Mr. Tapan Bose. The decision
on the proposal will be taken in the joint convention. It was suggested
that as it is highly technical subject, services of internationally
acclaimed experts can also be obtained.
During deliberations many members
said that it is necessary to build up pressure on both Government to
make Sub-continent visa free. Various Joint-committees like Kashmir, Peace and Minorities held working session during day. Dr. Mubashir
Hasan, leading Peace activist and former Finance minister, Pakistan
gave key-note address highlighting achievements of PIPFPD in its 10
years and challenges before the people of India and Pakistan to make
Sub-continent de-militarised.
The seventh joint convention was earlier
inaugurated by Shri Somnath Chatterjee (Speaker, Lok Sabha) yesterday.
It will carry on till 28th February. It is being attended
by more than 300 delegates from Pakistan
and 400 from India.
The Convention will be coming out with a Delhi Declaration 2005 by the
evening of 28th February, that will be released at a press
conference in Constitution Club at 4.00pm.
