Words are not enough to express our shock and grief at the great Tsunami tragedy that has hit peoples' lives and property like never before, in Asia. From Indonesia to Maldives, thousands of lives and millions worth property has been destroyed by this massive Tsunami impact. Coastal areas of Asia, especially South Asia, have been devastated by this tragedy. Tsunami has destroyed thousands of fishing families and coastal communities in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh. There is no confirmed information on the toll among the tribal and indigenous communities of Andamans, Car and Great Nicobar so far. Sri Lankan coast has also faced massive destruction.

As Pakistan India Peoples' Forum, we grieve and sympathise with the people who have lost their dear ones, their lifetime assets and their livelihood. We understand the turmoil these millions of famillies are undergoing at this juncture. We also realise that it is the poorer sections of the people, especially the fisher-peoples' community in our countries, which has been, affected the most by this natural tragedy.

As PIPFPD, we would like to convey our solidarity and support to the fisher-people in India and Pakistan, represented by National Fishworker’s Forum (India) and Pakistan Fishworkers' Forum (Pakistan). Fishworkers have always upheld the cause for Peace and Democracy in our countries and NFF has been a founding member of PIPFPD and a partner in our peace initiatives. We stand with the suffering people and their organisations in their immediate struggle to come to terms with the reality, avail maximum relief & rehabilitation to safer places and in the long-term struggle for better safety standards and precautionary mechanisms.

PIPFPD, in this hour of great crisis, requests all its members and state chapters to extend all possible solidarity and support to the suffering communities and their organisations. We need to strengthen all efforts for mobilising relief, rehabilitation and humanitarian as well as financial aid to those affected.
