Press statement 23-10-2003The Pakistan India Peoples’ forum for Peace and Democracy, wholeheartedly welcomes government of India’s recommendations aimed at breaking the continuing logjam between India and Pakistan, ending the restrictive visa regimes and encouraging people-to-people contacts.
The fresh radical proposals include a new bus service between Srinagar and Muzaffarabad, a ferry between Mumbai and Karachi, restoration of Khokhrapar – Munabao link by rail or road, free (by-foot) crossing of the Wagah border by senior citizens, resumption of sporting contacts, a ‘hotline between the coast guards, non-arrest of fishermen at sea, etc. The proposals also included a willingness to restart the ‘Samjhauta Express’ and increasing of the capacity of the Delhi-Lahore Bus service.
PIPFPD requests the Pakistan Government to reciprocate affirmatively to these proposals and help ease the current imbroglio between the two countries.
While supporting these fresh proposals, PIPFPD however, would like to remind both the governments that substantive political dialogue and discussions, along with other measures like increase in trade links and further interactions between peoples are necessary to bring our countries to the path of peace, progress and economic growth.
