Press Release November 17, 2003

The sixth joint convention of Pakistan-India People’s Forum for Peace and Democracy (PIPFPD) will be held at Karachi from December 12-14. Atleast 250 delegates each from India and Pakistan will be participating in this convention which is going to take place after a break of three years.

PIPFPD completes 10 years in 2004 has pioneered people-to-people relations with an agenda that is unabashedly political in the sense that it comprises Kashmir, intolerance (ethnic or religious), militarization (not just nuclear but conventional arms such as landmines), and globalization.

The foundation of the Forum was laid in a two day meeting in Lahore in September 1994 where we adopted a Lahore Statement which became the basic platform of the Forum. Since then we have held five joint conventions; Delhi (1995), Lahore (1996), Calcutta (1997), Peshawar (1998) and Bangalore (1999). Starting with hundred delegates each from the two countries in Karachi atleast 250 delegates from each country will participate in the sixth joint convention in Karachi. The main focus of the sixth convention is encapsulated in our slogan “DEFY TH DIVIDE.UNITE FOR PEACE”.

The Forum takes pride in having ushered in the era of people-to-people relations. It is our pioneering work that laid the foundation for emergence of other people's level initiatives such as on women's issue, trade unions, business, environment and media.

The Forum has also many firsts to its credit. By organising and hosting the visit of Pakistani parliamentarians in May this year we broke the diplomatic impasse. When more than 150 Indian delegates crossed the Wagah border in 1998 we became the first ever non-official 'jatha' to cross the border on foot.

While we are proud of our achievements it goes without saying that we do not want to sit on our laurels. But we are convinced that change is going to be brought about through people's initiative. It is this conviction that is the source of our unflinching determination to carry-on.
