Press Release 21-07-2003

The Pakistan India Peoples’ Forum for Peace and Democracy, India Chapter welcomes the decision of the Union Cabinet and the CCS of the Government of India, not to send Indian troops to Iraq. The GOI has also asked for a UN mandate for doing so, clearly expressing India’s unwillingness to support any US action in Iraq, respecting the sentiments of the large section of the Indian society. We believe this decision will only boost India’s moral position regarding the illegal US/UK invasion of Iraq, this year.

The resumption of the Delhi-Lahore Bus Service, the parleys with regard to opening up the air-links and the appointment of the High Commissioners in both the countries, are steps in the right direction. The Forum hopes that the process of normalization of relationships through dialogue at the governmental level would be speeded-up. In the meantime, both governments should atleast affirm and strengthen the initiatives at the peoples’ level.
