Press Release June 11, 2002

Welcome Diplomacy by India

The Pakistan India Peoples' Forum for Peace and Democracy welcomes the positive gestures announced by Indian Government yesterday. The decisions announced by the Secretary of Ministry of External Affairs, Ms. Nirupama Rao, include major break through like lifting of the ban on Pakistani flights entering Indian airspace and calling back of the Pakistani diplomatic staff, who were sent off earlier.

Understanding this move by the Government of India, as it is on the eve of the visit by Mr. Donald Rumsfeld, we request and demand the Pakistan Government to reciprocate immediately. We also urge the Indian Government to put diplomacy and dialogue on the front.

We strongly demand both Governments to, pull back their armed troops from the border and to engage in peaceful negotiations to settle all differences. We also request both the Governments to move towards a peaceful political solution to the Kashmir issue with the involvement of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

South Asia needs demilitarization, denuclearisation and an end to jingoism between Pakistan and India for the best development of both the countries. Towards this we call upon the people of India and Pakistan to show their Governments the right path.
