Press Release : 16-07-2002

Condemn mass murder of innocent civilians

The cruel killings of 27 innocent citizens reportedly by militant groups at Rajiv Nagar in the Jammu region of J&K is highly condemnable. We oppose targeting and victimising civilians in an armed conflict to which they are not even a party. While condemning these killings, we also express our heartfelt sympathies to the families of the dead and the injured.

We demand that the Government of India carry out an impartial enquiry into these killings and bring to record those responsible for the carnage. We would equally be concerned if opportunist political parties convert the issue to their advantage.

The onus is equally on the Government of India to immediately resume talks on all outstanding issues between the two countries- with ample representation of the people of Kashmir- thus putting an end to the cycle of violence targeting civilians in Jammu & Kashmir.

Admiral (Rtd.) Ramdas Sushil Khanna
Chairperson General Secretary
